Deputy CM DK Shivakumar reaffirmed on Wednesday that Karnataka has no drinking water shortage, adding that irrigation needs are being efficiently managed. “I have visited areas needing water supply, and we have sufficient storage,” he said.

At the All-India Water Resources Ministers’ Conference in Udaipur, he addressed Karnataka’s concerns, including the Tungabhadra River. He also sought a meeting with Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu to discuss constructing an alternate dam and removing silt affecting water storage.

Discussing the Mekedatu Dam project, Shivakumar emphasized the necessity of central approval. “This project should benefit both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, beyond political rivalries,” he said.

He also provided updates on the Almatti Dam on the Krishna River, stating that work has already begun pending a gazette notification. Additionally, discussions covered interlinking the Krishna, Cauvery, and Godavari rivers for regional benefit.

The Minor Irrigation Minister proposed projects worth ₹14,000 crore, with MPs urged to submit constituency-specific proposals. He also discussed the Upper Bhadra Project’s technical aspects and its potential advantages for the state.

On his visit to Sadhguru’s Isha Yoga Center, Shivakumar dismissed speculation about ties with the BJP. “I respect all religions, but I remain a committed Congressman,” he clarified.
