A startling incident unfolded in Karnataka’s Agumbe when a family discovered a 9-foot-long King Cobra concealed inside a box in their bedroom. The alarming find prompted immediate action from local wildlife experts and forest department officials, culminating in a successful rescue and release operation.
The King Cobra, one of the world’s largest venomous snakes, had slithered its way into a box stored in the loft of the family’s bedroom. The discovery was made when the family noticed unusual movements coming from the box. Alarmed by the presence of the large snake, they promptly contacted the forest department for assistance.
Upon receiving the distress call, the forest department officials reached out to the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS), known for its expertise in handling and rescuing wildlife. Field Director Ajay Giri and his team were swiftly dispatched to the scene to address the situation.
In a video posted on Instagram by Giri, the rescue operation is depicted in detail. The team from ARRS carefully approached the box, where they found the King Cobra coiled inside. With precision and expertise, they managed to bag the snake without causing it undue stress or harm.
Following the rescue, Giri and his team conducted an on-site awareness program for the local community, providing essential information on handling such wildlife encounters safely. The King Cobra was then released back into its natural habitat with the assistance of forest department officials, ensuring that it could continue its life in the wild far from human settlements.
Giri provided details of the operation in his Instagram post, stating, “A king cobra (9ft long) was sighted inside the bedroom of a house. Owner got worried and called in-charge forest department officials. ARRS was informed about the situation. Over the call, we instructed locals about dos and don’ts and rushed to the place. After inspection, we found the snake inside a metal box. The snake was gently bagged. We conducted an onsite awareness program for the local community. Later, the snake was released into the wild in the presence of in-charge forest department officials.”
This incident highlights the importance of prompt and professional intervention in wildlife emergencies and underscores the need for public awareness regarding the safe handling of encounters with dangerous animals. The successful rescue and release of the King Cobra not only ensured the safety of the family but also helped maintain the balance of the local ecosystem by returning the snake to its natural environment.
