Mangalore University, currently grappling with financial challenges, has reached out to its affiliated colleges, urging them to temporarily forgo outstanding examination and evaluation center fees, along with related charges. Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma conveyed the university’s predicament during a recent meeting with college principals, citing insufficient financial resources hindering the disbursement of funds.

Unpaid Dues and Assurances

The university is yet to settle outstanding examination center fees from previous sessions, which remain unpaid. However, Dharma assured that fees for semester examinations conducted in January 2024 would be promptly paid following the announcement of results. He attributed the financial strain to a significant decrease in exam and other fee collections from colleges and candidates, impacting the university’s financial stability.

Factors Contributing to Financial Strain

Dharma highlighted several factors exacerbating the university’s financial woes, including the formation of Kodagu University, leading to the migration of many colleges, as well as the increasing trend of colleges seeking autonomy. Additionally, the recent transition of one of the region’s oldest colleges into a deemed university and declining admissions have further compounded the financial challenges.

Appeal for Understanding

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Dharma appealed to colleges for patience, requesting additional time to address outstanding payments. He revealed that approximately 183 colleges have pending bills ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh per semester, each dating back to the academic year 2023. Despite the strain, Dharma expressed gratitude for the colleges’ cooperation and understanding, assuring them that the university is actively seeking solutions to alleviate financial burdens.

Hope for Government Assistance

Dharma also disclosed that the university is anticipating financial assistance from the state government, which would provide much-needed relief in addressing the ongoing financial challenges.
