In a unique initiative, Lakkundi Gram Panchayat (GP) in Gadag district has introduced a creative campaign to eliminate plastic waste from the village. Under this program, residents can exchange plastic waste for sugar. For every 2 kg of plastic handed over, villagers will receive 2 kg of sugar, and for 10 kg of plastic, 10 kg of sugar will be given. The campaign is set to begin on Saturday.

Lakkundi, a village known for its ancient temples, aims to tackle the plastic menace as part of its broader developmental efforts. Despite past attempts to enforce a ban on plastic use, local cooperation was lacking, prompting this innovative approach. The panchayat hopes the sugar-for-plastic exchange will encourage greater participation and cleanliness.

The village, which recently received ₹5.66 crore for tourism development, is also undergoing restoration of its heritage sites, including 13 ancient temples. With this campaign, the Gram Panchayat aims to clean the entire village within a few weeks.
