Gadag: In a tragic turn of events in Dasara Oni, Gadag, a 49-year-old man named Siddhalingappa Kotresha Angadi is alleged to have killed his 85-year-old mother, Sharadamma Kotresha Angadi, following a confrontation spurred by his drunken behaviour. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, drawing attention to the grim consequences of alcohol-induced violence.

On Tuesday night, Siddhalingappa was reported to have been involved in a disturbance with locals while heavily intoxicated. The altercation took place in a public setting where Siddhalingappa’s inebriated state led to a verbal and physical confrontation. Sharadamma, witnessing her son’s erratic behavior and the ensuing chaos, intervened to defend him, pleading with those involved not to escalate the situation.

However, the conflict did not end there. Upon returning home, Siddhalingappa’s anger appeared to have escalated. His mother, concerned about the previous night’s events and distressed by her son’s behaviour, reproached him for the noise and disturbance caused by his drunken state. This reprimand seemingly triggered a violent reaction from Siddhalingappa.

The domestic quarrel quickly turned fatal when Siddhalingappa, consumed by rage, attacked his mother. According to preliminary police reports, Siddhalingappa first suffocated Sharadamma, ensuring she could not call for help. Subsequently, in a fit of uncontrollable fury, he used a knife to stab her multiple times. This horrific act of violence led to her immediate death.

Following the brutal attack, the local police were alerted to the crime scene. Siddhalingappa was promptly arrested and taken into custody for questioning. The police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. They are examining the role of alcohol in exacerbating Siddhalingappa’s violent behaviour and evaluating the broader implications for community safety and domestic violence.

The arrest has also led to a broader discussion about the impact of substance abuse on familial relationships and individual behaviour. The authorities are keen to address these concerns as part of their ongoing investigation.

The news of Sharadamma’s death has stunned the local community in Gadag. Residents and neighbours are grappling with the shock of such a violent act occurring within their close-knit neighbourhood. Many are expressing their grief and disbelief, highlighting the severe emotional impact on those who knew the victim and her family.

The incident underscores a grave issue faced by many communities: the perilous effects of alcohol consumption on personal safety and family dynamics. Alcohol-induced violence is a critical issue that demands urgent attention from both policymakers and community leaders.

This tragedy raises important questions about the measures in place to prevent alcohol-related violence and support affected families. It highlights the need for more effective interventions and support systems for individuals struggling with addiction and those who may be at risk of domestic violence.
