The Red Courtyard House: A Blend of Tradition and Contemporary Design

The Red Courtyard House A Blend Of Tradition And Contemporary Design

Situated in the semi-arid city of Gadag, north Karnataka, ‘The Red Courtyard House’ stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of traditional architectural elements and modern design concepts.

Design Inspiration and Concept:

Crafted by Girish Rathodi and Vineetha Sara Jacob of JACOB + RATHODI ARCHITECTS, the design narrative of ‘The Red Courtyard House’ draws inspiration from the client’s ancestral residence, preserving the authenticity of semi-open spaces while infusing them with contemporary flair.

Seamless Transitions and Iconic Form:

Bordering a national highway and an intermediate road, the house boasts high visibility, prompting the architects to create a distinctive form enhanced with color. Adhering to Vastu principles, the roof design accommodates the water tank while providing sunshade from the western sun.

Heart of the Home: The Courtyard:

Central to the design is a landscaped double-height courtyard, offering a micro-climate retreat within urban living. Surrounded by various functional spaces, it invites ample natural light and ventilation while fostering a lush oasis ambiance.

Form and Aesthetic Imagery:

Bold architectural elements, including rectilinear boxes and a shingle-covered sloping roof, define the structure’s visual identity. The strategic placement of a steel trellis enhances both security and aesthetics, creating captivating shadow plays against the red canvas.
