Chetan Kumar, whose three minor daughters died after falling from a high-rise apartment in Ghaziabad, has spoken publicly for the first time, describing the moments before the tragedy and responding to speculation surrounding the case.

The sisters — Nishika (16), Prachi (14) and Pakhi (12) — are believed to have locked themselves inside a room before falling from a ninth-floor window. Police officials said there are no signs of external involvement at this stage and that preliminary findings point to a tragic act carried out by the girls in succession.

Father recalls final moments

Speaking to Press Trust of India, Kumar said he was unaware of what was unfolding until one of his wives noticed that the girls had bolted their bedroom door from the inside. “I always showered them with love. I never imagined something like this would happen,” he said.

Kumar also spoke about restricting his daughters’ mobile phone usage, claiming he was concerned about their health after noticing eye strain due to prolonged screen time. He said the decision upset the girls, though he believed it was taken in their best interest.

Digital trail under examination

Police in Ghaziabad said cybercrime teams are analysing digital evidence and attempting to trace missing mobile phones through IMEI tracking. Officials added that, so far, there is no proof linking the incident to any specific online game, though the girls’ digital activity is being reviewed.

A diary recovered from the room reportedly reflects emotional distress, isolation and a strong interest in Korean popular culture. Investigators said both the diary and a note found at the site were addressed only to the father.

Complex family situation

Authorities have also noted the family’s complex domestic structure and financial stress since the Covid-19 period, which may have contributed to social isolation. Police stressed that all factors — emotional, financial and digital — are being examined carefully.

The investigation by Uttar Pradesh Police is ongoing, and officials have urged the public to avoid speculation until the probe is complete.
