In a disturbing incident, six students and two educators from a government higher secondary school in Kochi have been booked after a girl student accused them of hurling itching powder at her last month. Law enforcement officials have charged the students under the Juvenile Justice Act, while the teachers face legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The girl recounted that she was resting her head on the desk post-exam when some classmates allegedly sprinkled itching powder nearby, some of which landed on her. Attempting to rinse it off in the washroom, she experienced intense irritation as the substance spread to sensitive areas, worsening her condition over the following days.

Due to the discomfort and side effects from prescribed medication, she struggled to prepare for her SSLC exams and missed classes. Initially, school authorities refused to allow her to appear for the exams, citing inadequate attendance. However, intervention by the General Education Department overturned the decision, granting her permission.

The girl’s mother, expressing outrage, accused the institution of negligence and demanded accountability from both students and teachers. She stressed that immediate help could have prevented her daughter’s prolonged suffering.

Police have assured a thorough investigation while proceeding cautiously, as exams are underway. The incident has raised concerns about student safety and institutional responsibility.
