
Another elephant tramples and kills man in Hassan
The persistent issue of wild elephant attacks in Hassan district claimed another life on Monday in Belur taluk. With this, the death toll due to elephant encounters in the district has risen to 87.
Anil, a 28-year-old daily wager from Gujanahalli village, was fatally attacked in Byadane village while heading home after his shift at Annamalai estate. The tragic incident occurred around 4:30 PM. Eyewitnesses stated that the elephant lifted him with its trunk, hurled him to the ground, and crushed him.
Conservator of Forests V Yedukondalu confirmed that officials arrived at the site to collect details. The Elephant Task Force (ETF) had already issued an alert about the animal’s presence at 4:15 PM. Despite ETF personnel being stationed in the estate, they were unable to prevent the fatal attack.
Belur MLA HK Suresh condemned the state government and the forest department, blaming their inefficiency for the continued loss of lives. He demanded that Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre visit the location and take immediate measures to ensure this tragedy is the last of its kind.
A high-level discussion involving forest officers, including CF and DCF, took place at noon to address the escalating human-elephant conflict. The menace is widespread in Belur, Sakleshpur, and Alur in Hassan, as well as in Mudigere, Narasimharaja Pura, and Chikkamagaluru.
