Two days after the fatal road accident of 26-year-old probationary IPS officer Harsh Bardhan, preliminary investigations have revealed that the airbags in the police vehicle failed to deploy. A senior officer confirmed on Tuesday that the 2020-model jeep, equipped with airbags for both front seats, did not activate when the vehicle overturned.
Both Bardhan and the driver were wearing seat belts at the time of the incident. Investigators are examining the vehicle’s speed and probing why it veered left. A possible tyre burst is suspected to have caused the accident, which occurred on Sunday near Kittane in Hassan taluk. The jeep lost control, striking a house and a tree on the roadside.
Bardhan, a 2023-batch IPS officer from Madhya Pradesh, was en route to report for duty as the probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police in Holenarasipur. He suffered severe head injuries and succumbed during treatment, while the driver, Manjegowda, escaped with minor injuries.
The investigation is focusing on the mechanical integrity of the vehicle, especially the alleged tyre burst and airbag malfunction. Authorities are determined to uncover the cause and prevent similar incidents in the future.
