In a deeply disturbing case from Channarayapatna taluk in Hassan district, a woman named Shwetha (36) has been arrested for allegedly killing her six-year-old daughter, Sanvi, by drowning her in a pond near Jinnenahalli Koppalu.
Shwetha had been married to Raghu from Shivamogga for seven years, but their relationship was marred by constant conflict. The couple had been living separately for the past five years, and their daughter had been under the care of Raghu’s parents for the last four years. Divorce proceedings were already underway, according to police sources.
Despite multiple reconciliation efforts by relatives, the couple remained estranged. Raghu, employed in Nelamangala, had custody of Sanvi. On Saturday, Shwetha brought Sanvi to her parental home, but as it was locked, they spent the night at a neighbour’s house.
The next morning, Shwetha reportedly took Sanvi to a nearby field and allegedly drowned her in a pond. Local farmers heard the child’s cries and rushed over, only for Shwetha to claim that she had attempted a suicide pact with her daughter.
The villagers acted swiftly and took Sanvi to a hospital, but she was declared brought dead. The Hirisave police have launched a thorough investigation into the matter and taken Shwetha into custody.
