Haveri’s Akka Cafe: A Beacon of Empowerment for the Transgender Community
A trailblazing initiative, Akka Cafe, managed by the transgender community, is set to open in the Haveri district administration complex. Spearheaded by Zilla Panchayat CEO Akshy Sridhar under the DAY-NULM and NRLM schemes, the project aims to provide economic self-reliance to marginalized groups.
This marks a significant shift for transgender individuals in Haveri, who are transitioning from traditional means of earning, like alms-seeking, to professional cafe management. Announced in the 2024-25 budget by CM Siddaramaiah, Akka Cafe promotes financial independence and sustainable employment, traditionally supporting SHG women. Haveri’s transgender community approached Sridhar to manage the cafe, which is now being established in the district complex’s basement.
The initiative is part of a larger plan to set up 50 such cafes across Karnataka, supported by grants of up to ₹15 lakh for infrastructure. Four transgender individuals have completed training in management, while final preparations, including rent and pricing, are underway.
“Our goal is to offer quality and hygienic food at affordable prices,” said CEO Sridhar, emphasizing social integration and empowerment through this venture.
Akka Cafe stands as a testament to inclusive progress, paving the way for meaningful opportunities and societal acceptance.
