Outrage in Ballari as five women die after childbirth in government hospitals
Residents of Ballari district are furious after the tragic deaths of five women within 15 days at two government-run hospitals: Ballari District Hospital and the Ballari Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS). Four of the deceased underwent cesarean surgeries at the district hospital.
Families allege medical negligence, highlighting inadequate care and oversight. The latest victim, Mahalaxmi, 20, from Vijayapura, succumbed to severe bleeding and infection after a normal delivery at BIMS. Her parents claim she was healthy before admission, accusing doctors of mishandling her post-delivery care, despite BIMS officials citing pre-existing anemia and health risks.
The deaths of Lalitamma, Rojamma, Nandini, and Muskaan at the district hospital followed cesarean procedures, sparking questions about surgical practices. On November 9, 14 cesareans were conducted, with seven women developing complications and four succumbing within a week.
Public anger has also turned toward local leaders, including District In-Charge Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, for their silence and inaction. Economically disadvantaged families, reliant on government healthcare, fear similar tragedies as hospital authorities attribute deaths to pre-existing health issues.
The incidents spotlight Ballari’s poor socio-economic conditions, amplifying calls for improved healthcare in the region. Victims’ families demand accountability and systemic reforms to prevent further maternal deaths.
