In a chilling case that has gripped Karnataka, police have arrested two more men linked to the brutal killing of Swati Ramesh Byadgi, a young nurse hailing from Masur village, Haveri district. This brings the total number of suspects held to three, including the main accused, Nayaz, who was apprehended a day prior.
Swati, employed as a nurse in Ranebennur town, was reported missing on March 3. Her body surfaced in the Tungabhadra river on March 6, later identified after a post-mortem confirmed strangulation. Authorities revealed that Nayaz, along with his associates Vinay and Durgachari, orchestrated the murder. It is believed Nayaz, who ended his relationship with Swati after agreeing to an arranged marriage, plotted her death fearing she would reveal their affair.
The trio allegedly lured Swati to Swarna Park in Ranebennur under the guise of a conversation. From there, they drove her to an abandoned school in Rattihalli, where she was strangled using a saffron towel. Her body was then disposed of in the river.
This heinous crime has triggered a political outcry. Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai accused the government of failing to curb such incidents, suggesting a deeper connection to interfaith relationship violence. BJP leaders condemned the murder, calling it part of a disturbing trend.
Meanwhile, Swati’s bereaved family seeks justice, as police face mounting pressure to deliver swift and decisive action.
