Bengaluru: As temperatures continue to rise across Karnataka, venturing outdoors warrants caution. Many regions are experiencing a heatwave, with the weather agency reporting 521 cases of heatstroke and two fatalities since March.

The northern districts of Karnataka, particularly Bagalkote and Kalaburgi, have been severely affected. Each district has reported one heatstroke-related death between March 1 and April 3. Additionally, Chikkaballapura, Bagalkote, Chitradurga, and Mandya are among the worst-hit areas, with 102, 69, 56, and 54 cases of suspected heatstroke, respectively.

Citing the situation, the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a fresh heatwave advisory. It recommends that people stay indoors during peak temperatures, especially from noon to 3 pm. The advisory urges people to remain hydrated, advises wearing light-colored cotton clothes, sunglasses while venturing out, usage of umbrellas, and hats for protection from heat. It also advises people to refrain from eating fried foods, caffeinated, carbonated drinks.

For pets, the advisory suggests providing shade and ample water. Individuals feeling dizzy or sick due to high temperatures are urged to seek immediate medical attention. And advised those venturing out must carry a bottle of water with them.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) reported an average maximum temperature of 42.7 degrees Celsius in Kalaburagi District. About 75% of the state’s geographical area recorded maximum temperatures ranging from 36 to 42 degrees Celsius. Some parts of Yadgir, Kalaburagi, and Raichur districts saw temperatures ranging from 43 to 45 degrees Celsius.

In a welcome relief, weather agencies have forecasted light rain over Kodagu, Chamarajanagara, and Ramanagara districts this week. Additionally, a “yellow” alert has been issued for Gadag, Bagalkote, Koppal, Kalaburagi, and Ballari districts.
