Hippargi Dam: Technical Glitch Causes 15,000 Cusecs Water Outflow
Hippargi Dam: A technical glitch at gate number 7 of Hippargi Dam has led to an outflow of 15,000 cusecs of water, as reported by Jamkhandi Assistant Commissioner Shweta Bidikar. The issue was first reported by the dam’s engineer two days ago, prompting an inspection that confirmed the problem.
The malfunction has affected the water supply to Rabakavi Banahatti taluk, raising concerns among local residents. Currently, the dam’s reservoir holds 4.5 TMC of water, with an inflow of 12,000 cusecs coming from Maharashtra and nearby rivers.
Authorities have initiated repair work on the affected gate, with officials optimistic that it will be completed by Wednesday night or Thursday. Bidikar has reassured the community that there will be no further issues with water supply in the upcoming days.
The significant outflow has completely emptied the backwaters near Rabakavi Banahatti, which could have implications for local ecosystems and communities reliant on the water body.
This incident underscores the importance of maintaining infrastructure at dams to prevent technical glitches that can disrupt water supply. As repairs are underway, local authorities are working to ensure that residents are not adversely affected in the future.
