Auto drivers and owners in Hubballi are grappling with the absence of designated auto-rickshaw stands, a crisis that began during the construction of HD-BRTS corridors, flyovers, and concrete roads. About 155 auto stands were dismantled for these infrastructure projects, with civic authorities assuring restoration post-completion — a promise still unfulfilled.
With over 17,000 autos operating in Hubballi and 25,000 across the twin cities, drivers are forced to park in unauthorized areas, resulting in traffic congestion, friction with traffic police, and loss of income. Passengers also suffer due to the inconvenience of not finding autos at fixed locations.
Auto unions, including the Uttar Karnataka Auto Rickshaw Chalakar Sangh, have repeatedly petitioned officials. President Shekharayya Mathapati urged police and municipal authorities to allocate proper parking spaces, warning of worsening issues if ignored.
During former Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde’s tenure, five auto stands with full facilities were approved, but only a few (like near Banni Mahankali temple and the railway station) materialized. Key areas like Hubballi airport, Old Bus Terminal, and Bharat Mill Stop still lack proper stands.
Current HDMC Commissioner Rudresh Ghali claimed unawareness of previous plans but assured action after consulting relevant officials.
