A driver-cum-conductor from the North-Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has been suspended after allegedly halting a bus mid-route to perform namaz, triggering administrative action. The incident came to light after a video, showing the driver praying from a passenger seat, went viral on social media.
The staff member, attached to Hangal depot, was operating a bus bound for Vishalgad, Maharashtra. The exact spot where the bus was stopped is still under verification. Vijaykumar G, divisional controller of the Haveri division, issued the suspension order, terming the act as “objectionable”.
NWKRTC Managing Director Priyanga M said she was alerted to the video on Wednesday night and promptly directed disciplinary action. “We are validating whether the bus was halted, possibly disrupting service for passengers,” she stated, adding that while the corporation respects religious beliefs, operational duties must remain unaffected by personal practices.
State Transport Minister echoed this view, labeling the act inappropriate and directing authorities to conduct a thorough probe and take strict action based on findings.
The NWKRTC, an extension of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), manages services across nine divisions in northern and western Karnataka. The corporation has reaffirmed that while freedom of religion is upheld, it cannot come at the cost of public service responsibility.
An internal inquiry has been launched, and further decisions will be taken following a detailed investigation into the employee’s conduct.
