HDMC to receive old note towards payment of tax

Hubballi: To encash the situation resulted out of the demonetisation of high value currency notes to get the pending tax amount paid, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has decided to receive old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 from citizens towards paying property tax, stallage fee and water bills among others.

In this regard the Corporation has opened special counters at all 12 zonal offices of the HDMC, while old notes are also being received in Hubballi-Dharwad One centres. Old notes will be received till Monday (November 14), from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

HDMC Commissioner Siddhalingayya Hiremath told media persons that more than Rs. 50 crore tax and fee amount was pending, and citizens can use demonetised notes to pay them. “We are spreading the message through social media, while audio clip is being played through auto-tippers also. We request the citizens to use this opportunity, and pay the tax to ensure development works in twin cities” he said.

Though the permission to receive old notes for getting tax and fees paid was received from the government on Thursday evening, a decision was not taken then as Friday itself was the last date. Now, the duration to receive old notes has been extended till Monday, he said.

From property tax, advertisement tax and other fees, the HDMC has to collect Rs. 89.13 crore in 2016-17, while RS. 40.39 crore has ben collected so far. Rs. 48 crore pending water bills have also to be collected, he explained.

Around 700 petty shops which were obstructing the public movement on roads and footpaths were removed in the twin cities, and this drive would continue, he added.
