In a significant step towards eco-friendly urban development, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has launched a pioneering project that turns single-use plastic waste into a key component for road construction. The initiative is currently being piloted in Lingarajnagar, Hubballi.
The process starts with household waste collection by HDMC, where usable plastic is segregated, shredded, and transported to an asphalt mixing plant. There, about 8% of the bitumen traditionally used is replaced with this shredded plastic, which enhances road durability, reduces water damage, and improves resistance to potholes and wear.
This innovation isn’t just green—it’s cost-effective, saving up to ₹15 lakh per kilometre compared to standard roads. HDMC Commissioner confirmed plans to expand this model citywide, integrating sustainability into all future roadworks.
“By using plastic waste, we’re not just building roads—we’re building a better future,” he said. This project reflects a growing shift in civic planning, where waste becomes wealth, and cities like Hubballi-Dharwad lead the way in turning environmental threats into public assets.
