A woman living in a women’s hostel in Coimbatore was killed on Wednesday after a confrontation with her husband, who later posted a photograph with her body before being arrested. Police identified the accused as Balamurugan, a native of Tirunelveli, and the victim as Sri Priya, with whom he had three children.

Sri Priya had been staying in a hostel in Coimbatore due to personal circumstances while continuing to work in the city.

Police say the accused suspected an extramarital relationship

According to Rathnapuri Police, Balamurugan suspected that his wife was in a relationship with another person. He went to the hostel where she was staying and asked her to accompany him. When she refused, an argument escalated.

During the confrontation, police said he took out a concealed sickle and attacked her, resulting in her death at the scene.

Disturbing act shared online

After the incident, police noted that the accused remained beside the body until officers arrived. He reportedly took a selfie with the victim and uploaded it as his status with the caption, “the payment for betrayal is death.” Authorities have strongly condemned the act, calling it deeply distressing and harmful.

Husband arrested; investigation continues

Balamurugan was arrested shortly after the incident. Police have registered a case and are conducting a detailed inquiry into the events leading to the crime, including the nature of the couple’s relationship and any prior disputes.

Officials said counselling and support will be offered to the couple’s three children, who are now under the care of relatives.

A call for stronger community vigilance

The incident has renewed discussions on the need for support systems, early intervention in domestic disputes, and increased awareness of emotional and psychological distress within families. Police urged communities to report warning signs early to prevent such tragedies.
