In a deeply distressing incident, a financially distressed family in Jeedimetla, Hyderabad, was forced to remain with the body of a deceased elderly relative for three days as they were unable to afford the funeral expenses. The shocking situation came to light after neighbours noticed a foul smell emanating from the house and alerted authorities.
Body discovered after neighbours raised alarm
The family, originally from Mahabubnagar, was residing in NLB Nagar near Shapur Nagar. The deceased, identified as 76-year-old Swami Dasane, reportedly passed away nearly a week ago. For three days following his death, the family did not step out, prompting concern among neighbours.
When the foul smell became noticeable, residents alerted the Jeedimetla Police, who arrived at the scene and initiated an inquiry. A case of suspicious death was registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Family’s financial struggle and reluctance to seek help
Police investigation revealed that the family was undergoing severe financial distress and lacked the means to perform the last rites. Despite the dire circumstances, they reportedly refused to seek assistance from neighbours or local authorities due to what officers described as a sense of “pride”.
Speaking to Siasat.com, Jeedimetla Circle Inspector Gaddam Mallesh confirmed that the incident had taken place 10 days earlier. “The family was in financial distress and could not perform the final rites,” he said.
Police and NGO step in to conduct funeral
Recognising the gravity of the situation, Jeedimetla Police coordinated with Satya Harishchandra, an NGO that assists with funeral services for unclaimed or financially unsupported cases. The organisation performed the cremation on December 4, ensuring dignified last rites for Dasane.
Residents in the area expressed sorrow that the family’s hardship had gone unnoticed until the situation reached an alarming state. The incident has sparked conversations around awareness of vulnerable households and the need for stronger community support mechanisms for distressed families.
