In a bid to improve air quality and reduce dust in Sun City Kalaburagi, the Kalaburagi City Corporation (KCC) has embarked on an ambitious sapling planting initiative under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). This effort targets 10 major roads across the city, aiming to green both sides of these key stretches.
The selected roads for this project include:
- Sardar Vallabhai Patel Circle to Aland Checkpost
- Jagath Circle to Heerapur
- Annapurna Circle to Kharge petrol bunk
- 25 km of the city’s ring road
A variety of 10 sapling types are being planted, including golden shower, burugu, tububia rosia, gulmohar, Singapore-Cherry, kadamb, alstonia, peltoporum, and spathodia.
Deputy Commissioner RP Jadhav highlighted that the initiative involves planting 8,000 flowering and fruit saplings, with an investment of Rs 96 lakh. By mid-August, 5,000 saplings had already been planted, with a private nursery center handling the planting and maintenance. Additionally, KCC has allocated Rs 1.4 crore to the forest department for planting and maintaining saplings along the city’s main roads over the next three years. The forest department has successfully planted approximately 5,000 saplings so far.
Kalaburagi was identified as a high-air-pollution city in 2021-22, and this sapling initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve air quality, with a national target set for reduction by 2024-25.
