Rising Concern: Child Sexual Abuse Cases in Kalaburagi District
Kalaburagi is witnessing a troubling increase in reported incidents of child sexual abuse, with 81 cases filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act in the 2022-23 period, rising to 90 cases in 2023-24. Alarmingly, by the end of August 2024, 60 cases have already been registered, indicating a concerning trend.
Local law enforcement has responded by conducting awareness programs in schools and colleges to educate students about child sexual abuse and prevention strategies. Despite these efforts, many cases involve abuse by family members and neighbors, and there have been reports of young couples facing punitive measures due to their relationships, leading to false allegations under the Pocso Act.
Kalaburagi City Police Commissioner Sharanappa SD emphasized the collaborative efforts with NGOs and community workers to spread awareness, especially in rural areas. Rajkumar Rathod, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare, stressed the importance of a supportive home environment, urging parents to be proactive in protecting their children.
