Bidar: Dr. Mallikarjun Kharge has been elected as President of All India Congress Committee (AICC), which has a history of over a century. The District is the birthplace of a veteran political statesman who has made a mark in national politics.
Mallikarjun Kharge, who has emerged as one of the most influential leaders in the country, has not forgotten his love and concern for his native village Varavatti. He frequently visits the village, meets his near and dear ones and reminisces about his childhood days. Kharge has contributed a lot to Varavatti whenever in power, which is still a remote village. He has helped the villagers through various development works such as government hospital, veterinary hospital, high school, sanction of houses under the housing scheme, etc. Now that a man from the village has become the president of the national party, there is an atmosphere of celebration in Varavatti.
Born in Varavatti in Bhalki Taluk, Kharge spent a few years of his childhood in his hometown. He is a true Congressman, who is closely associated with the Gandhi family and became the party’s new charioteer as a non-Gandhi by defeating his rival Shashi Tharoor in the election slated held to elect the AICC President after a gap of 22 years. He is the son of Mapanna Kharge and mother Saibavva. Mallikarjun Kharge was born on July 21, 1942 in Varavatti Village. The house, which spent his childhood days, is still witness to this day and has been completely demolished. According to close friends of the family, he also owns five acres of land in his name in the village.
