Kalaburagi: Twenty-six newborn babies had an unbelievable escape at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Government General Hospital at Kalaburgi after fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon.

Fakirappa and M.P. Umesh and lab attendant Ramesh Pyati were the saviours for the day.

The alert staff, two nurses and a lab attendant saved the newborns with their timely action. The trio was having lunch in the ICU when two air conditioners caught fire. They first broke the window panes and then arranged staff members to shift the little ones to safer places.

Fire fighters took 30 minutes to douse the fire.

District Surgeon Nalini Namoshi said that a short circuit was suspected to have started the fire. She said that air conditioners and other equipments had suffered damage.

While Fakirappa was injured on the hands, none of the others involved in the rescue operation were injured.
