Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna Arrested Over Threats and Casteist Abuse

Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna was recently arrested following serious allegations of threatening a contractor and using casteist slurs. A local court has granted Munirathna a two-day police custody after his arrest, despite the Karnataka Police’s request for a week’s custody. Munirathna, representing the Rajarajeshwari Nagar Assembly constituency, faces accusations stemming from two separate cases. These allegations include issuing death threats and using casteist language against Chelvaraju, the contractor who filed the complaints. Munirathna’s advocate, Sadananda, has vehemently denied the charges, calling them baseless. He asserted that there is no evidence supporting the allegations and confirmed plans to approach the high court. “We will also be approaching the high court,” Sadananda told reporters. “We will file a counter complaint against the complainants and the truth will come out,” he added.

The accusations include claims that Munirathna and three others threatened Chelvaraju and demanded a bribe. An audio clip released by Chelvaraju during a press conference further heightened the controversy, alleging harassment for financial gain. In response to the serious nature of the charges, the Karnataka BJP unit has issued a show cause notice to Munirathna, demanding an explanation within five days. This move underscores the party’s approach to addressing internal issues amid ongoing investigations.

The Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) has expressed strong objections to the alleged casteist slurs and has planned a protest outside Munirathna’s residence in Bengaluru. In anticipation of the demonstration, police have tightened security around Munirathna’s home. Measures include installing barricades and closing nearby roads to manage the potential disruption and ensure public safety.
