An election for the post of Karnataka BJP president will be conducted soon, announced Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday, following the incumbent B Y Vijayendra’s assertion that he would retain the position. Chouhan, who is overseeing the BJP’s organisational elections in the state, confirmed that after elections are held in a certain number of districts, a state-level election will be organized.
Chouhan’s remarks came after a separate faction within the BJP discussed potential candidates to challenge Vijayendra, pushing the party’s leadership to hold a vote for the presidency. When questioned about whether the new president would be elected or appointed, Chouhan emphasized that the BJP conducts elections at every level, even for booth committees, although in some cases, the president is chosen unanimously. He further stated, “What’s wrong if it is unanimous?”
Vijayendra, who was appointed as the Karnataka BJP president in November 2023, is serving a three-year term. However, his elevation to the role has caused discontent within the party. Despite his efforts, the tensions have not subsided. Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, a leader of the opposing faction, has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with Vijayendra’s leadership.
