With temperatures forecasted to surge across Karnataka, particularly in North Interior regions, the state government has released a fresh advisory urging citizens to safeguard themselves against the impending heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the possibility of 2 to 14 days of extreme heat stretching until May.
Officials are recommending that people stay indoors between 12 pm and 3 pm, hydrate frequently, wear light, sun-shielding clothing, and steer clear of tea, coffee, alcohol, and fizzy drinks. Residents are also advised to use ventilated rooms, keep pets shaded and hydrated, and never leave children or animals inside parked vehicles.
Additionally, the public is encouraged to consume more seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables, and natural juices to maintain body fluids.
District administrations have been instructed to closely monitor weather warnings from IMD and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), and to pinpoint vulnerable towns and villages. Local bodies must guarantee an uninterrupted drinking water supply at public hotspots like bus terminals and markets. Veterinary officials have been tasked with keeping necessary medication ready for animals affected by heat stress.
Community halls are to be prepped with shaded areas, resting spots, doctors, Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS), and clean drinking water. Authorities must also anticipate potential water shortages, readying tankers and borewell sources accordingly.
Symptoms like dizziness, fainting, cramps, and heatstroke (body temperature above 40°C) must be addressed promptly. Immediate first aid includes shifting the person to shade, applying damp cloths, giving ORS or buttermilk, and seeking medical help if conditions worsen.
