Bengaluru:

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has proposed renaming Bengaluru’s Namma Metro as Basava Metro, in honour of 12th-century social reformer Basavanna. The announcement was made during the valedictory ceremony of the Basava Culture Campaign–2025, held in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Proposal to honour Basavanna’s legacy

The Chief Minister said the move aims to recognise Basavanna’s teachings on equality, justice, and social harmony. “Basavanna’s ideals are timeless and reflect the principles enshrined in our Constitution. Naming the metro after him would be a fitting tribute,” Siddaramaiah said.

He added that the state government had earlier declared Basavanna as the “Cultural Leader of Karnataka” and directed that his portrait be displayed in all government offices. The government is also in the process of establishing a Vachana University to promote research on Basavanna’s philosophy and literature.

Approval required from the Centre

Siddaramaiah noted that the renaming process cannot be completed without the Centre’s approval, as the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is a joint venture between the state and central governments. “If it were solely a state project, we would have renamed it immediately,” he said.

Officials confirmed that the proposal will be formally sent to the Union Government for consideration. Once approved, all signage, maps, and public announcements will be updated to reflect the new name, “Basava Metro.”

Basavanna’s influence in Karnataka

Basavanna, a revered 12th-century saint and social reformer, founded the Anubhava Mantapa, which served as a spiritual and intellectual forum promoting equality and social reform. His movement challenged caste discrimination and advocated a society based on work, devotion, and humanity.

Over the years, successive Karnataka governments have paid homage to Basavanna through educational programmes, cultural events, and welfare initiatives inspired by his teachings. The proposed renaming is seen as part of this broader effort to strengthen the state’s cultural identity.

Political and cultural implications

Political observers note that the renaming could spark mixed reactions. While the move has been welcomed by several cultural organisations and Lingayat groups, others believe that the original name “Namma Metro” has already become an identity for Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister, however, emphasised that the intent is not political but cultural. “This is about honouring a visionary who stood for equality and reform. Basavanna belongs to everyone,” Siddaramaiah said.

Conclusion

The proposal to rename Bengaluru’s metro after Basavanna is now awaiting central clearance. If approved, the change will mark another symbolic step by the Karnataka government to integrate Basavanna’s egalitarian ideals into the state’s public life.
