In a move to promote the Kannada language, several doctors in Karnataka have begun writing prescriptions in Kannada. This shift comes after the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) urged the state government to mandate prescriptions in the local language, aiming to strengthen the cultural identity.
An orthopedics doctor from Chitradurga, Dr. Sanjay Raghavendra, went viral on social media for writing an entire prescription in Kannada, receiving widespread praise from Kannada activists. Similarly, a dentist, Dr. Murali Mohan from Hosangadi, also adopted Kannada for his prescriptions.
KDA Chairman Purushotham Bilimal shared these examples and reiterated the call for the government to prioritize Kannada in health centers. While many doctors have voluntarily embraced this practice, Karnataka’s health minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, stated that making Kannada mandatory for prescriptions is not practical, given the flexibility required for medical terms.
