Karnataka Families Recount Narrow Escape in Pahalgam Attack
Bengaluru: Several families from Karnataka narrowly escaped the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday, and many are now sharing harrowing tales of how fate saved them by mere moments. A family from Harapanahalli, while shopping for saffron, ducked just in time as gunmen opened fire on the store they had just entered.
Over 50 tourists from coastal Karnataka also recalled how a last-minute change in plans kept them away from the line of fire. Labour Minister Santosh Lad, who is coordinating relief efforts, said 170 people from Karnataka are still in Kashmir, and steps are being taken for their safe return.
Tragically, two Kannadigas—Bharat Bhushan from Bengaluru and Manjunatha Rao from Shivamogga—lost their lives in the attack. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a ₹10 lakh ex gratia for their families and blamed the incident on a “serious intelligence failure,” drawing parallels to the Pulwama attack.
In Jayanagar, Bengaluru, a candlelight vigil was held to honor the victims. Locals lit candles, showered flowers, and raised slogans demanding justice. Vinita Kaul, a Kashmiri Pandit, urged for swift government action, stating, “It’s humanity first—not about region or religion.” Dr. Anuradha Khar, also a Kashmiri Pandit living in Bengaluru, echoed the sentiment, adding, “We left Kashmir to be safe. Today, we don’t feel safe anywhere.”
Meanwhile, a family of five from Chikkamagaluru, including two children, is confirmed safe. They were en route to Baisaran Valley when they heard gunfire and returned to their hotel.
