Bengaluru, Karnataka: Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has condemned the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, calling it a “ghastly” incident that underscores the need for enhanced safety and security measures for medical professionals. In response, a meeting has been scheduled for August 20 to address the safety concerns of doctors, nurses, and hospital staff across the state.

Rao emphasized the importance of creating a secure environment for healthcare workers, noting that women make up more than 50% of the hospital workforce. The upcoming meeting will involve various associations, doctors, nurses, and hospital management representatives to review existing laws, protocols, and safety guidelines. The goal is to develop actionable steps to improve safety in both government and private hospitals.

In light of the nationwide strike by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Rao acknowledged the protest’s validity but stressed the need to ensure that essential services continue without disruption. He reiterated that the safety and protection of healthcare workers are paramount, describing the incident as an “eye-opener” that highlights the critical need for robust safety standards.
