Karnataka celebrated the ‘International Day of Democracy‘ on Sunday with a groundbreaking 2,500-km-long human chain, symbolizing unity, equality, and participative governance. The event stretched from Bidar in the north to Chamarajanagar in the south, covering all 31 districts of the state.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with senior ministers and officials, led the main event in front of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. The chain saw participation from people across diverse groups, including transgender and differently-abled individuals, who joined in reading the Constitution’s preamble.

The Karnataka government, supported by civil society, organized the event. Officials anticipate that it will be recognized as the “longest human chain in the history of the world,” with approximately 25 lakh participants and an average of 1,000 people per kilometer. Additionally, the event will see the planting of 10 lakh saplings.

A world record verifying team from London is expected to assess the event. Participants will receive certificates for their involvement. Last year, Karnataka marked the International Day of Democracy with a similar event dedicated to reading the Constitution’s preamble.
