An outbreak of avian flu has recently been detected in certain districts of neighboring Kerala. Consequently, officials from the Karnataka Animal Husbandry department in Mangaluru have heightened vigilance in the border areas. They have confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation in Kerala before deciding on any measures.

According to officials, Kerala authorities have contained the avian flu within Alappuzha district. However, precautions are still being taken regarding the transportation of poultry and poultry products via trains and at railway stations.

Both railway and road transport of chicken from Kerala to Mangaluru are under surveillance. Mangaluru, known for its substantial consumption of chicken from Kerala, has temporarily halted procurement from suppliers in the affected areas.

Market sources report that the animal husbandry department of Kerala has advised containing the avian flu within specific districts. Despite this, there hasn’t been a significant disruption in the supply chain yet, as local stocks have been able to meet the demand.

However, the demand for chicken might see a slight decline due to ongoing temple festivals in coastal regions, where some consumers traditionally avoid meat-based meals until Saturday. Nevertheless, Sunday may see a resurgence in demand, particularly for hot chicken curry, as per local observations.

Awareness about the avian flu in neighboring Kerala has been raised among market participants by officials in the animal husbandry department of Dakshina Kannada. This has led to speculation about potential price fluctuations if demand decreases.

Farm owners like Aston D’Souza emphasize a cautious approach, indicating that they prefer not to add to the panic surrounding avian flu unless local stocks deplete below demand levels.

Additionally, Dakshina Kannada serves as a viable alternative market for suppliers from other districts like Shivamogga, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru. In the event of a prolonged disruption in Kerala supplies, purchases from these districts could be pursued, albeit at slightly higher costs compared to Kerala stock, as noted by market experts.
