Karnataka Orders Private Medical Colleges to Surrender NRI Seats

Karnataka Orders Private Medical Colleges To Surrender Nri Seats (1)

In response to a Karnataka High Court ruling, the directorate of medical education has directed 17 private medical colleges to transfer an equal number of MBBS seats from their NRI quota to the state government quota for the current academic year. This order, issued on April 25, is a consequence of allegations of seat blocking by these colleges in 2018.

The controversy began when the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences took action against students who had secured seats through unlawful means. The university refused to approve their admissions and barred them from exams. The affected students sought judicial relief, and while the court allowed them to sit for their exams, it imposed penalties on the colleges involved. The court’s decision mandates that these institutions surrender NRI seats to the state quota as a form of compensation.
