Bengaluru: Karnataka Infrastructure Development Minister MB Patil has urged the Union Government to upgrade Hubballi and Belagavi airports to international standards, citing strong passenger traffic and the need to reduce dependence on Goa airport for international travel. He emphasized that both airports are eligible and can serve the needs of North Karnataka’s growing population.

Patil, along with IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge, held discussions with airline representatives in Bengaluru to enhance connectivity to six Tier-2 cities, including Kalaburagi. He also announced that flight services to Bidar from Bengaluru will resume from April 15.

Meanwhile, a high-level Airports Authority of India (AAI) team has been in Bengaluru since April 7 to inspect proposed sites for the city’s second airport. Two locations on Kanakapura Road have already been reviewed, and a third site on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road will be inspected next. The final decision will follow AAI’s report.

Patil stressed that the second airport is essential to meet Bengaluru’s growing civil and industrial aviation needs, and called for transparency in the site selection process.
