The Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (PHANA) in Karnataka has announced its support for the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) day-long strike on Saturday, August 17. This strike is a response to the recent rape and murder of a medical professional at a Kolkata hospital. The protest aims to demand justice for the victim and advocate for enhanced safety measures for healthcare workers.

From 6 am on August 17 to 6 am on August 18, Out Patient Departments (OPDs) at private health facilities in Karnataka will be affected. However, emergency and life-saving services will remain operational to ensure patient safety. Govindaiah Yatheesh, honorary president of PHANA, condemned the increasing violence against medical professionals and emphasized the need for a secure working environment.

The PHANA’s participation underscores a collective push for stronger laws, better enforcement to prevent violence, and improved security within healthcare facilities. This strike aligns with the IMA’s nationwide call for justice and reform in the wake of the Kolkata incident.4
