Medical aspirants in Karnataka have reason to celebrate as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved at least 450 additional MBBS seats across the state for the academic year 2025-26.
Eight government medical colleges will each receive 50 additional seats, including:
- Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences
- Chikkaballapur Institute of Medical Sciences
- Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences
- Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences
- Mysore Medical College and Research Institute
- Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences
- Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute, Bengaluru
- Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences
However, seven other colleges — Bidar, Chamarajnagar, Gadag, Karwar, Koppal, Mandya, and Shimoga — that applied for extra seats did not receive approval. Additionally, proposals for Ramanagara and Kanakapura Institutes of Medical Sciences were withdrawn due to infrastructure inadequacies.
Among deemed universities, Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavimath Medical College received 50 additional seats, while Sri Siddhartha Medical College, Tumakuru and Sri Siddartha Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bengaluru were not approved for extra seats.
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Bribery Case Update
The Dharwad High Court has stayed an NMC order preventing admissions at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), which was previously embroiled in a bribery case. The court directed the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) to include 188 and 12 MBBS seats, respectively, in the counselling matrices and proceed with admissions for 2025-26.
Last year, Karnataka had 12,395 MBBS seats, and with these additions, the number is set to increase significantly, offering more opportunities for aspiring doctors in the state.
