In a bold move to combat climate change and enhance the state’s green cover, the Karnataka government has set ambitious goals through the creation of the Karnataka Forest, Wildlife, and Climate Change Mitigation Foundation (KFWCCMF). The foundation is part of the state’s broader strategy to reduce climate impacts, protect forests, and address the growing issue of man-animal conflict. The 2025 Budget has earmarked significant efforts towards these goals, including carbon credit generation through agro-forestry and afforestation.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighted the formation of KFWCCMF, which will be a joint effort involving several corporate entities and social reformers. The initiative aims to foster environmental development through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions and donations. Additionally, the state is set to roll out the Karnataka State Integrated Climate Change Action Plan, which will focus on sustainable development and mitigating climate risks.
The budget also outlines measures to strengthen the financial stability of farmers through agro-forestry, alongside the introduction of a carbon credit policy. The plan encourages the cultivation of plant species known for their high carbon retention capabilities, further promoting forestry activities.
Karnataka’s government continues its commitment to increasing the state’s green cover, making this a crucial step in the state’s long-term environmental preservation strategy.
