Karnataka’s Higher Education: Faculty Shortages Threaten Student Futures

Crisis In Karnataka’s Higher Education Severe Faculty Shortages Threaten Student Futures

Karnataka’s higher education system is in crisis, with 62% of teaching positions in universities remaining vacant for years, jeopardizing student futures. This shortage affects major universities, including the University of Mysore, Karnataka University, and Mangalore University, all of which report over 60% vacancies.

Despite appeals from vice-chancellors, the government has yet to address this issue. Temporary guest professors fill gaps, but with many senior staff set to retire soon, the situation is dire. Minister for Higher Education Dr. MC Sudhakar blames the previous BJP government for the crisis, citing mismanagement and unplanned expansion of universities.

The government promises to fill vacant posts within four years, starting recruitment processes immediately. However, universities continue to struggle with financial constraints and insufficient staffing, affecting both academic and research activities.
