Despite facing a shortage of personnel, the Karnataka State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) successfully rescued 3,978 individuals from 3,318 emergency calls received in 2024, showcasing its resilience and dedication. As part of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services (KSFES), the SDRF plays a vital role in responding to disasters such as floods, landslides, vehicle accidents, and other natural calamities, ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state.

Currently, Karnataka’s SDRF operates with five companies stationed in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, and Davanagere. However, the force is severely understaffed, with just 137 permanent personnel, supplemented by 79 ex-Army recruits. Despite this limitation, the team has remained committed to its mission, with the highest number of rescue calls coming from Mangaluru and Udupi, particularly during the monsoon season.

KSFES and SDRF Director TN Shivashankar highlighted the critical role of the SDRF in emergency response, including high-risk rescues like children trapped in borewells, major vehicle accidents, fire mishaps, and building collapses. Additionally, the SDRF conducts public awareness and training programs, educating people on the proper use of life-saving equipment such as life jackets and ropes.

A senior officer emphasized the need for more SDRF units in coastal regions, which are particularly vulnerable to natural disasters. Addressing the shortage of personnel, the officer stressed the importance of increasing recruitment and improving resources to enhance the effectiveness of disaster management operations. With the monsoon season approaching, it is crucial to focus on strengthening infrastructure and deploying additional manpower to reduce casualties and improve preparedness.
