The Kodagu Sarva Jananga Okkoota, a coalition of community organizations, has called for a Coorg bandh (shutdown) on December 12, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon. The shutdown is in protest against alleged disrespectful remarks made by lawyer K.R. Vidyadhar regarding Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and General K.S. Thimayya. The coalition is demanding that local authorities impose a six-month ban on Vidyadhar’s presence in the district to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Rajeev Bopaiah, the convenor of the Okkoota, emphasized the importance of taking strict measures to prevent further offensive behavior and called for an immediate response to Vidyadhar’s comments, which have deeply hurt the sentiments of the local community. The call for the bandh has gained significant support from various sectors, including auto drivers, merchants, and business owners. A total of 29 community organizations have united in backing the bandh, highlighting the widespread anger surrounding Vidyadhar’s alleged statements.

The controversy began on November 22 when Vidyadhar was arrested by the Kodagu police late at night after allegedly posting derogatory comments about the two respected military leaders on social media. He was presented before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in Madikeri, where objections were raised regarding his bail. However, Vidyadhar was granted conditional bail and released that evening, sparking further outrage among residents.

Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimayya are highly regarded figures in Kodagu, celebrated for their distinguished military service. Their legacy holds great pride within the community, and the remarks made by Vidyadhar have led to widespread protests, with many community members demanding accountability and action to protect the district’s values.

The situation remains tense as the Okkoota and other local groups continue their calls for justice.
