Madikeri: The site on NH-275 between Mangaluru and Madikeri, known for the 2018 landslide, is once again showing signs of danger as significant cracks have formed on the retaining wall constructed to prevent such disasters.

The multi-crore barrier, built as a protective measure, has developed alarming fissures, raising concerns of another potential collapse. Families residing just below the affected structure have been relocated to a relief shelter in Madikeri by authorities as a precautionary measure.

Despite years of appeals and funds sanctioned for permanent repair, long-term solutions to prevent landslides and road damage along this stretch of highway remain incomplete. Several temporary fixes have been implemented, but the threat to travelers persists, especially during heavy rainfall.

A similar wall behind the Deputy Commissioner’s office, which was built at a cost of ₹7.5 crore, is also currently undergoing reinforcement due to structural weaknesses.

The compromised wall, located just 4 km from Madikeri town, was finally completed in 2023 — over five years after the landslide. However, within two years of its construction, it is already showing serious structural flaws.

Following the visible damage, the Madikeri taluk tahsildar conducted an inspection and directed immediate evacuation of residents living in the danger zone. Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja also surveyed the site.

Locals have blamed the issue on poor construction quality and demanded strict action against the contractor responsible.
