Suntikoppa, Kodagu: Tension gripped Nakuru Shirangala near Suntikoppa on Wednesday after two men were arrested for issuing a death threat at gunpoint to a local resident, allegedly over an environmental complaint.
The arrested individuals, Shashi and Anil, both residents of the village, reportedly pointed a gun at their neighbour Prasanna and threatened him with dire consequences. The motive? Prasanna had allegedly informed authorities about wastewater from a pig-rearing unit—run by the accused—being illegally discharged into a water source that ultimately joins the Harangi Dam backwaters.
The confrontation escalated into a heated altercation, during which the accused allegedly pulled out a firearm and threatened Prasanna’s life.
Acting swiftly on Prasanna’s complaint, Suntikoppa police registered a case, arrested the duo, and seized the weapon used in the threat. The court has since remanded both Shashi and Anil to judicial custody.
The incident has stirred concern in the local community, not just over rising tensions but also about pollution of critical water sources in the region.
