MADIKERI: Kodagu, renowned for its mild climate, is reeling under an intense heatwave, disrupting daily life and agriculture. Since February, soaring temperatures have led to severe water shortages, with Harangi Dam, streams, and local waterbodies drying up rapidly. The Cauvery River’s low water levels forced the suspension of water sports at Dubare.

The crisis extends to wildlife, as dwindling water sources push animals into human settlements. Wild elephants have been spotted in coffee plantations, causing damage. Coffee growers are struggling with irrigation costs, as the flowering season demands adequate moisture.

Cyclone Fengal in December and the lack of January-February rains have worsened conditions, with temperatures soaring to 32-35°C. Health concerns, especially for children and the elderly, are rising. Experts warn that without pre-monsoon rains expected in late March, the heatwave could intensify.

Environmentalists urge residents to place water outside for birds and wildlife. Authorities remain on alert as Kodagu faces an escalating water crisis.
