MADIKERI: The Kodagu division Forest Department has registered over 3,000 cases of forest encroachment, with some currently undergoing eviction processes. Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has issued stringent orders to clear all encroachments across the Western Ghats, prompting department officials to be vigilant in identifying and addressing further encroachments in the district.

Kodagu, renowned for its lush greenery, faces challenges as land is increasingly converted for commercial purposes, including transforming forests into estates and homestays or resorts. This conversion disrupts the ecosystem and escalates human-wildlife conflicts, particularly during the monsoon season. Khandre’s directive to evict encroachments represents a significant step towards safeguarding the district’s eco-sensitive zones.

Madikeri DCF Bhaskar confirmed that there are 3,410 pending forest encroachment cases in the division, involving a total of 5,551 acres of encroached land across Somwarpet, Madikeri, Bhagamandala, Kushalnagar, and Sampaje forest ranges. Some cases also involve tribal claims under the Forest Rights Act.

The department is prioritizing encroachments over 3 acres for immediate action while temporarily withholding eviction for smaller encroachments under 3 acres. This targeted approach aims to address the most significant encroachments effectively while balancing the rights of smaller landholders.
