MADIKERI: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced the formation of a dedicated team in Kodagu to prevent pollution of the River Cauvery and tackle illegal encroachments on water bodies across the district. Speaking to reporters during his visit to the revered Talacauvery and Bhagamandala temples, he emphasized the state’s commitment to protecting its water resources.
During his visit, Shivakumar performed special pujas and collected sacred water from Triveni Sangama and Talacauvery. He revealed that this holy water would be brought to Bengaluru for distribution during the launch of the upcoming Water Conservation Campaign, marking World Water Day.
Highlighting the importance of water preservation, Shivakumar also announced the introduction of the Cauvery Aarati ritual, to be performed at various points along the river, including at the KRS Dam. Funds will be allocated to support this initiative, aimed at creating awareness about water conservation and environmental protection. Additionally, a week-long state-wide awareness drive will be organized to coincide with World Water Day celebrations.
On the university merger issue, Shivakumar clarified that the plan involves integration, not closure, of institutions. He assured that students’ opinions are being considered, especially concerning Kodagu University, where staff from Mangalore University have shown reluctance to work. A final decision will be discussed during the assembly sessions.
Addressing the bandh call, Shivakumar appealed for peace and confirmed his attendance at Tamil Nadu CM Stalin’s conference opposing unilateral constituency delimitation.
