Kodagu’s Tourism Boom: From Coffee Trails to Cultural Tales
Kodagu: Nestled in the Western Ghats, Kodagu continues to draw in travellers in record numbers. In 2024 alone, the district welcomed 45.72 lakh visitors, up from 43.99 lakh in 2023—a clear reflection of its rising allure, especially as a hub for coffee tourism and eco-friendly travel.
Deputy Director of Tourism, Anita Bhaskar, described this growth as a “golden era” for Kodagu. She noted that the consistent tourist inflow highlights the region’s enduring charm, scenic beauty, and expanding infrastructure.
During a press interaction, Bhaskar detailed the Tourism Police 2029 initiative, aimed at improving visitor safety and better mapping tourism potential. After years of vacancy, her appointment as Deputy Director has significantly bolstered tourism planning and coordination.
So far, 23 locations across Kodagu have been earmarked for development. Nine tourist guides have already been deployed, with ten “Pravasi Mitras” soon to join them in improving tourist experience and cultural engagement.
Mandalapatti in the Spotlight
As part of the “One District, One Destination” mission, Mandalapatti Hill Station—a favourite among trekkers and adventure seekers—will see focused development, including improved visitor amenities.
Kodagu is also being woven into a new tourism circuit, and a “Coorg Village” near Raja Seat is in the works. A partnership with the Gonikoppal Orange Growers’ Co-op aims to promote local produce as a unique tourist offering.
Eco-Tourism and Green Goals
To encourage responsible tourism, Bhaskar urged homestays and hotels to promote plastic-free practices. The state has sanctioned ₹1 crore for upgrading major sites like Abbey Falls, Iruppu Falls, and Malatirike Hills, thanks to the efforts of MLA A.S. Ponnanna.
Future plans include improved transport to adventure zones and hosting a Pravasi Utsava to connect with Kodagu’s global diaspora. Product quality checks are also underway to safeguard Kodagu’s reputation.
The event wrapped up with a felicitation for Anita Bhaskar, celebrating her leadership in shaping Kodagu’s tourism renaissance.
