Madikeri, June 17: The Thatalli tribal settlement at Maldare near Siddapura in Kodagu paints a picture of neglect despite land grants under the Forest Rights Act. Over 70 families residing here lack basic amenities like electricity, water supply, toilets, and proper housing, prompting threats of protest.
Basic Amenities Denied
Residents of the settlement, including children and elderly, endure hardships with no electricity for piped water supply. A temporary water connection by Maldare gram panchayat requires them to travel long distances to fetch water.
Unfulfilled Promises
Despite receiving Record of Rights, Tenancy, and Crop (RTC) under the Forest Rights Act, the majority live in huts without proper roads or permanent housing. Only a few families have received minimal facilities, while promises of development remain unfulfilled.
Call for Mainstream Recognition
Leaders like Shankar and JK Ramu demand inclusion of tribal communities into mainstream development initiatives. Allegations of political interference and bureaucratic indifference hinder progress, prompting calls for urgent action.
Threat of Protest
Tribal leaders Krishna, Shivanna, and Parvathi warn of protests if immediate steps are not taken to address the settlement’s dire conditions.
